Project Information for Law in China

Our Law Project in China

In China we offer various law placements in the thriving city of Shanghai. All of our current placements are well established and offer volunteers the opportunity to gain work experience of Chinese law in prestigious law firms. Our range of placements cater for a number of different areas of interest; previous volunteers have worked in banking law, mergers and acquisitions, corporate intellectual property, taxation and insolvency.

The Role of the Volunteer

The role of the volunteer depends on where they are placed. To give an idea of the type work volunteers are required to do, listed below are various examples of possible placements. Volunteers could be placed in one of the following law firms:

Shanghai Well-Done Law Firm

The Shanghai Well-Done Law Firm was established in 1994 to provide legal aid to companies and enterprises of various types. Volunteers on this placement could be involved in: legal research (English law); preparing draft documents; proofreading documents; meeting clients; attending court hearings; marketing. Working hours are from 9:00 am to 17:00 pm.

Lehman, Lee & Xu

During their placement at Lehman Lee & Xu, volunteers become part of a team of attorneys who specialize in commercial and corporate law. A typical day is spent working on 2-3 different cases in which volunteers are required to conduct research for these different cases as well as preparing a draft paper on how they think the case should progress. There is no set structure to each day since every case is different and needs different attention and action.

Longan Law

Longan Law specializes in corporate law. Tasks given to the volunteers include: updating the website daily through researching various websites dedicated to Chinese Law; editing letters written by Chinese lawyers with attention to the correct use of the English language; writing legal letters to companies and immigration authorities in China and the US; summarizing contracts; researching aspects of English, European and American law; attending seminars to brief Chinese lawyers on aspects of English/European Law; meeting clients and introducing them to the firm. Work hours are usually between 9am-6pm.

Whatever the placement, volunteers are in an exciting environment with the opportunity to take part in a variety of interesting tasks!
